Copilot for JetBrains now needs IDE 2025.2 or later

Check the IDE version first, then separate model defaults from the tools that start automatically.

Review scope: GitHub’s dated JetBrains release announcement, read 11 October 2026. No plugin installation, configuration change or native workflow test was executed.

The version requirement changed

GitHub’s 10 October release ends Copilot support for JetBrains IDE 2025.1. The plugin now requires 2025.2 or later. This is an IDE compatibility change, not a retirement of Copilot.

Two separate controls

Enterprise managed settings can choose a default available agent model for new conversations while preserving an explicit picker selection. A new MCP setting can stop automatic server startup for Copilot and Claude. A default model and an active tool server are separate configuration questions.

Diagnostic menus also gain a Fix action: it opens inline chat in agent mode when available, otherwise ask mode.

Record the setup before comparing results

For a reproducible trial, record your IDE and plugin versions, selected model, organization policy and enabled tool servers. The coding task worksheet helps keep those conditions attached to the same small task. This release provides no independent code-quality result.

See the Copilot profile and Cursor/Copilot billing comparison for separate feature and cost scopes. Existing price snapshots and editorial scores have not been refreshed by this announcement.

Source and limits

Documentation review only. Account eligibility, plugin behavior and performance were not independently exercised. No new recommendation or comparative winner is established.
