What’s free: Standard is free with an eligible Google Account: 100 notebooks per user and 50 sources per notebook. AI use is compute-limited; no fixed daily prompt count is promised here.
When you pay: UK Google AI Plus bundle: £4.49 GBP/month with monthly billing. Google AI Pro: £18.99 GBP/month with monthly billing. These are bundles, not standalone notebook prices.

Keep the reading pack visible
NotebookLM, called Gemini Notebook in Google's current documentation, fits a task with a defined set of readings: ask a question, locate the supporting passage and make notes you can take back to the source. Begin with the material your course actually assigned rather than asking a generated summary to decide what counts as evidence.
The distinction is between understanding a supplied source and establishing that the source itself is correct or current. A citation back to an uploaded document helps you inspect the answer; it does not turn that document into a complete literature review. Keep page references and read surrounding paragraphs before using a claim in an essay.
Capacity and AI usage are different limits
Google's plan table, read 20 October, lists 100 notebooks per user and 50 sources per notebook for Standard. These are capacity limits, not a promise of unlimited questions, audio or other generated material. Compute-based usage and account eligibility need separate checks. A larger paid bundle does not remove the need to verify an answer.
Start with an allowed reading
Use one document you are permitted to upload and ask a narrow question whose answer you can check yourself. Save the source, response and any correction. If your school account cannot open the service, check institutional access with the administrator instead of assuming a personal paid plan fixes it.
The linked study example uses Zotero, Google Docs and Anki. It did not run Gemini Notebook. The UK bundle prices below retain their 19 October reading date and are not standalone notebook charges.
