Perplexity is useful as an entry point into a topic when you want a source trail quickly. The practical distinction is the research loop: ask a question, open the cited originals, and refine the question after reading them. Citations make an answer inspectable, but they do not prove that the source supports the exact sentence or that important opposing evidence was found. For a buying decision, collect the vendor document and an independent account separately. Use the answer to locate evidence, then write the decision from the evidence you actually checked.
