Slack moved free workspaces from 10,000 searchable messages to a 90-day rolling history
Effective 1 September 2022, the free Slack tier stopped letting you search messages older than 90 days, replacing the previous 10,000-message lifetime limit. Pro plan pricing also shifted upward at the same time. For solo founders and small teams, the change quietly turned Slack from 'free forever for tiny teams' into 'pay for Pro or lose your history every quarter.' The pattern matters: Slack had been gradually eroding the free tier since the Salesforce acquisition closed in 2021. If you're on free and counting on history for context, either pay or move to Discord/Linear/Slite for async, depending on what Slack is actually doing for you.
