What You'll Build

A digital product ready for sale with a polished design, a Gumroad store with automated delivery, and an email funnel driving consistent sales.

Prerequisites

Architecture

Notion is your product planning hub where you validate ideas and manage your catalog. Canva creates the actual digital products - templates, guides, worksheets, etc. Gumroad handles sales, delivery, and payment processing (with Stripe under the hood). ConvertKit builds your audience and drives sales through email marketing. Stripe serves as a backup payment option if you want to sell from your own website.

Audience → ConvertKit (email funnel) → Gumroad (purchase + delivery) → Customer gets digital product

5 Steps

1
Notion

Identify your product & plan in Notion

~20 min

Validate your digital product idea, define what you'll create, and plan the entire project before designing anything.

  1. Create a Notion page called "Digital Products" with sub-pages for: Product Ideas, Active Products, and Sales Tracking
  2. Brainstorm 5-10 digital product ideas based on your expertise: templates, guides, checklists, swipe files, presets, planners, or resource kits
  3. Validate your top idea: search Gumroad for similar products to confirm demand exists, check what price points are working, and read reviews to find gaps you can fill
  4. Define your product scope: what exactly is included? How many pages/templates/items? What format (PDF, Canva template link, Notion template, spreadsheet)?
  5. Create a simple project checklist in Notion: Design, Write Copy, Set Up Gumroad, Build Email Funnel, Launch
💡
Tip: The best-selling digital products solve a specific, painful problem. "50 Instagram Canva Templates for Real Estate Agents" outsells "Social Media Templates" every time. Be specific about who it's for.
2
Canva

Create the digital product with Canva

~30 min

Design your digital product using Canva - whether it's templates, a guide, worksheets, planners, or any other digital asset.

  1. Set up a Brand Kit in Canva for your product line: consistent colors, fonts, and style that looks professional
  2. Create your product using the appropriate Canva format: for PDF guides use the A4 Document template, for social media templates use the platform-specific sizes, for planners use US Letter or A4
  3. Design a cover page or preview image that looks great as a thumbnail - this is the first thing buyers see
  4. Add real, actionable content to your product. Templates should be genuinely useful, guides should have practical steps, and checklists should be comprehensive
  5. Export your finished product: PDFs for guides and worksheets, share Canva template links for editable templates, or create a ZIP with all files organized in folders
💡
Tip: If you're selling Canva templates, share them as Canva template links (not just PDFs). Buyers love being able to customize templates directly in Canva.

Set up Gumroad store & product listings

~20 min

Create your Gumroad store, set up your product listing with compelling copy, and configure automatic delivery.

  1. Log into Gumroad and customize your profile: add your name, bio, profile photo, and brand colors to create a professional storefront
  2. Create a new product: upload your files (or add links for Canva/Notion templates), set the product type to "Digital Product"
  3. Write a high-converting product description: start with the problem your product solves, list exactly what's included with specifics (e.g., "47 ready-to-use templates"), add bullet points for key benefits, and include a preview image or GIF showing the product in action
  4. Set your pricing: use "Name a fair price" with a minimum to let buyers pay what they want, or set a fixed price. Include a higher-priced bundle option if you have multiple products
  5. Add product images: a mockup showing the product in use, a table of contents or overview showing everything included, and 2-3 close-up screenshots of the actual content
💡
Tip: Add a "What's Inside" section with a numbered list of everything the buyer gets. Specificity sells - "47 templates" converts better than "lots of templates."
4
ConvertKit

Build email funnel in ConvertKit

~25 min

Create an email marketing funnel that builds your audience and automatically sells your digital products.

  1. Create a ConvertKit landing page or embed form offering a free lead magnet related to your paid product (e.g., if you sell 50 templates, give away 5 for free)
  2. Build a 4-email nurture sequence that triggers when someone downloads your freebie: Email 1 (immediate) - deliver the freebie and introduce yourself. Email 2 (Day 2) - share a valuable tip related to your product topic. Email 3 (Day 4) - tell the story of why you created the paid product. Email 4 (Day 6) - make the offer with a direct link to your Gumroad product
  3. Set up a sales automation: tag anyone who clicks the Gumroad link, and send a follow-up email 2 days later to anyone who clicked but didn't buy (with a limited-time discount code)
  4. Create a simple broadcast template for promoting new products or running sales to your full email list
  5. Add the ConvertKit signup form to your social media bios, website, and any content you publish
💡
Tip: Your free lead magnet should be genuinely valuable and directly related to your paid product. Think of it as a free sample that leaves people wanting the full version.

Launch & promote your products

~25 min

Execute your launch, promote across channels, and set up systems for ongoing sales.

  1. Send a launch email to your ConvertKit list announcing the product with an opening-week discount
  2. Post on social media: share your product with context about why you built it, who it's for, and what transformation it provides - include screenshots and a direct link to your Gumroad page
  3. Share in relevant online communities (Reddit, Facebook Groups, Slack communities, Discord servers) - provide value first, mention your product naturally
  4. Enable Gumroad's "Discover" feature so your product appears in Gumroad's marketplace and gets organic traffic
  5. Set up a system for collecting and sharing testimonials: after someone buys, send a follow-up email asking for a review. Add the best ones to your product page
💡
Tip: After launch, the real growth comes from content marketing. Write Twitter threads, LinkedIn posts, or short blog articles that provide value related to your product topic, with a natural mention of your product.
