A source library you can check
Zotero belongs at the point where you stop collecting links and start needing to account for them. An essay needs the right author, publication date, title and passage behind each claim. A reference manager can hold those records and format a bibliography; it cannot decide whether a paper supports your argument.
For a first essay, build one collection and check one complete reference before importing the rest. Keep the source URL and your reading notes beside the item. That makes it easier to distinguish a quotation, your interpretation and a question you still need to resolve. A beautifully formatted reference with the wrong metadata remains wrong.
What the worked example revealed
In the 20 October study workflow, a manually prepared RIS file imported one report with seven authors, its date, publisher and URL. The report identifier landed in Extra rather than Report Number. We corrected that field, then generated an APA 7 bibliography as an actual HTML file. This is a small native import and bibliography check, with the input and output available to inspect.
The Google Docs outline was created separately. The Zotero browser connector, live citation insertion, automatic bibliography updates, collaboration and cloud sync were not tested. Do not treat the example as evidence that every import format or citation style works.
When a paid feature becomes relevant
The free manager and paid attachment storage solve different problems. Check whether you need synced PDFs on several devices before paying for more attachment space. A local library is not limited to the free sync allowance. Read the dated storage table below rather than treating a storage upgrade as the price of using Zotero.
