New Fly.io organizations have no ongoing free tier. The free trial lasts up to two hours of Machine runtime or seven days, whichever comes first. Legacy organizations and individual resource allowances have separate terms. Official source · Free-plan cost checklist

Our evaluation

Fly.io is worth considering when an application needs more control over runtime and regional placement than a simple static deployment provides. That control brings an operations obligation: decide how many machines should run, where state lives and how the service recovers when one instance fails. A cheap small machine is a useful cost anchor, but it is not the price of a complete resilient application. Memory, storage, egress and a managed database may dominate the real bill. Start with one region and a clear recovery plan, then add distribution only for a measured need. Test a deployment, rollback and restart with persistent data before moving production traffic. The relevant comparison is the whole operating setup, including engineering attention, not just a headline compute rate.

What the documentation confirms

What the documentation confirms

  • Fly Machines can be started/stopped and placed by region through API or flyctl.
  • Fly Launch supports app-level configuration and containerized deployment.
  • Compute, volumes, network transfer and databases contribute separately to the bill.

Try one complete task

Deploy a disposable container in one region with a small volume. Exercise health checks, restart and rollback, verify data persistence and inspect the resource bill estimate; remove test resources after checking stopped-machine and storage charges.
