Our evaluation
Aider suits a developer who wants to keep AI assistance inside an existing terminal and Git workflow. The repository map is useful context, but it is a budgeted summary, so a large codebase still benefits from a narrowly framed task and explicit relevant files. Start on a branch with a clean baseline, give the assistant the project conventions, and review its diff before accepting the commit. The operational tradeoff is control versus setup: you select the provider, credentials and model, and you also own rate limits, cost monitoring and the test environment. A working patch with meaningful regression coverage is the decision criterion; benchmark rankings alone cannot establish that for your repository.
