GitHub is useful when a project needs a durable record of changes and a reviewable path from proposal to release. Its strongest contribution is the shared workflow around code: a change has a diff, an explanation, automated checks and someone accountable for accepting it. A team does not gain that discipline merely by moving repositories into an organization. Define branch rules, required checks and permissions before adding more automation. Free can support substantial collaboration, while paid tiers become relevant for particular governance and private-repository controls. Budget cloud development, CI and security features independently from repository seats. Evaluate whether a new contributor can reproduce the setup and ship a small reviewed change safely; that exposes missing documentation and permissions more effectively than comparing feature counts.
