Our evaluation

Datadog is more persuasive when an engineering team needs to correlate an operational symptom across several systems than when it only wants a single uptime check. Start from a concrete incident question, such as whether latency comes from a saturated host or an application dependency, and identify the telemetry needed to answer it. Sending everything indefinitely can produce a bill without a clearer diagnosis. Assign owners to tags, alert thresholds and retention, and distinguish actionable alerts from dashboards that merely look busy. The infrastructure host rate is one component, not a platform-wide price. Estimate logs, traces, custom metrics and other products separately, then test whether an on-call colleague can follow an alert to a useful next step.

What the documentation confirms

What the documentation confirms

  • Infrastructure Monitoring collects metrics and provides visualization and alerting.
  • The platform offers separate application, log, network and security products.
  • Infrastructure host rates and retention differ by plan; other products use their own billing units.

Try one complete task

Instrument a disposable two-service environment, create one latency and one host-saturation alert, trigger safe synthetic failures and have a colleague trace each signal to its cause. Inspect all enabled product usage before scaling ingestion.
