Two signed-in accounts, one active account

OpenAI’s 30 October release note announces account switching for the ChatGPT iOS and Android apps. Two accounts can remain signed in, with one active at a time. Each retains its own conversations, memory, settings and subscription.

The mobile feature is rolling out. A missing Switch account option does not establish that a paid upgrade is required.

Where the account boundary matters

On mobile, use Settings, then Switch account. At the two-account limit, log out of one before adding another. Managed-workspace controls may restrict access.

Switching does not move subscriptions, uploads or chat history between accounts. A paid plan belongs to its account. Changing accounts is different from selecting a workspace within one account.

Mobile notifications can arrive for both accounts, depending on settings and device permissions. Opening another account’s notification changes the active account.

Check the active account before continuing

For someone separating study, personal and work conversations, the useful check is which account is active before uploading a file or considering a purchase. Managed-account policies still apply to that account. See the ChatGPT profile for separately dated access and pricing notes.
